I must leave you for a brief while, Amy. There is somebody who might need my help very soon. An old friend of mine, let’s say… I owe him an apology.
Sherlock’s almost the same as any other kid- spending his afternoons running around and looking for the next great adventure in hidden corners of the house- when the Doctor shows up and promises to take him away so that Sherlock doesn’t have to be alone and so that he’ll never have to grow up ever again. To show him amazing, wonderful things, like the fact that the Earth doesn’t revolve around the sun (well, New New New Earth doesn’t, anyway). He said he’d be back in just a second but he disappears for years while Sherlock is left behind, bored and forced to grow up in a world where no one sees things the way that he does, where no one appreciates the things he can do.
But the Doctor always remembers his friends. And he always comes through, even if it’s only at the last second.
And after the Doctor does it, saves the day and saves Sherlock, he asks Sherlock to run away with him again, to have the very greatest of adventures just like he’d promised. But Sherlock declines- not because he doesn’t want to, who wouldn’t?- but because he’s got a companion of his own now. Someone to look out for, and most importantly, someone who looks out for him.
(I seem to have feelings about this. Wholock, why aren’t you a real thing?)

I’m pretty convinced at this point that the Doctor and Sherlock are old friends. And that he helped him survive. Okay,...
